About Me
Hi! I'm the Lobster Queen. Please let me tell you a little bit about myself. I'm a New Brunswicker, born and bred. (That's New Brunswick, the province in Canada - not New Brunswick, New Jersey!) My family on my mother's side is Acadian, settled in the Maritimes in the early 1600's. On my father's side, my family is Dutch. Lucky for me, both the Acadians and the Dutch love food and family gatherings.
Mom was a pretty good cook, and she taught me alot. Even how to make pie crust! Helping Mom make a cherry pie when I was 3 years old. It was Mom who taught me how to cook lobster, too, of course.
I grew up in Bathurst, on the Baie de Chaleur (the Bay of Warmth). Of course, that meant that the beach was a staple of summer time for us. It was never enough for us, though, we kids would have been there every day if we could, of course!
Youghall Beach is still my favourite, of all the beaches I've ever been to. Here I am with my brother and mother at my uncle's cottage.
We moved from Bathurst to Moncton when I was 13. That put us a little farther away from the beach - Shediac and Parlee about 15 minutes drive. But we still made it a regular event. Shediac is famed for its lobster, and its lobster festival. This is the largest lobster in the world, in Shediac, and that's me when I was in high school, with another one of my cousins. I think this picture was taken around 1990.
I'm married now, with 2 children. We live in Quispamsis, just outside Saint John, New Brunswick. We're a 5 minute drive from the Kennebecasis Valley River (my in-laws are a 5 minute walk from one of the beaches on that river). That empties into the Bay of Fundy.
So, fresh seafood is plentiful here, and I like to take advantage of that. My husband Richard doesn't like shellfish (strange, eh). And my older son is a picky eater all around anyway, and follows his father with the shellfish. So I cook lobster and other shellfish for just my daughter and I. And guests, of course. But I wanted to share my love of lobster with others. Which is part of why I created this website.
Another love of mine (this one I share with my husband) is camping. We have a hybrid tent-trailer, and we've camped around the Maritimes and in Maine. So far. As the kids get older and have the patience for longer car rides, we go further and further, as we all love visiting new places. I intend to bring restaurant reviews to you from those travels as well. We always open the camping season at Fundy National Park on Victoria Day weekend. This is me and my daughter Angela in front of the trailer on that weekend in 2008.
And here's my son William doing some beachcombing in St. Martin's in August 2009.
I'm the main photographer of the family, so there are rarely pictures of me - especially not eating! But here's a shot of our whole family apple picking together. Fall of 2008, on the Kingston Peninsula. Please don't tell Richard - he doesn't know his picture is here!!! Oh yeah, and the Indiana Jones outfit - well that was William's Halloween Costume and he wore it pretty much everywhere that October.
I love to cook, I love fresh ingredients, and local ingredients. I try to shop at farmer's markets whenever I can. And since lobster is a local food - and one of my favourite foods, too, I've learned to cook lobster lots of different ways. And now I'm sharing those with you. I hope you enjoy them. I would love to hear from you about your favourite lobster experiences or any questions you might have about lobster. Please enjoy the site!
